Downtown Calgary

The region is a part of the central Calgary area, Alberta. Divided into several neighbourhoods, namely the Central Business District, Eau Claire, Chinatown, East Village, and the West End, the downtown area is bordered by 14th Street W. on the west, the Bow River and Prince's Island Park on the north, the Elbow River on the east and the CPR mainline tracks on the south.

Downtown Calgary is about 1,042.4 m (3,420 ft) above sea level, and the airport is 1,076 m (3,531 ft). In 2011, the city covered a land area of 825.29 km2 (318.65 sq mi). The area can be recognized by its numerous skyscrapers - of which some structures are Calgary Tower and the Saddledome. Office buildings tend to concentrate within the commercial core, while residential towers occur most frequently within the Downtown West End and the Beltline, south of downtown.

Commercial Core in the Calgary Downtown region

The commercial centres in downtown Calgary are divided into a number of districts including:

Entertainment District/Stephen Avenue: Located along the 8th Avenue South, the district contains the pedestrian mall of Stephen Avenue, lined with restaurants and shops, enclosed shopping centres. Landmark buildings found in this district include the Hyatt Regency Hotel, which incorporates several historic buildings into its facade.

Olympic Plaza: The urban park and gathering place in downtown Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The venue was created for the medal ceremonies. Olympic Plaza serves as a meeting place, and an outdoor event area, hosting concerts and festivals. In the winter, it is used as a public ice skating area. The plaza is accessible by Calgary's CTrain system at the City Hall station.

Cultural District: The cultural district is centred on the Burns Building and Olympic Plaza and contains educational and cultural venues such as Bow Valley College, Glenbow Museum and Arts Commons.

Government District: This is an informal subdivision of the downtown core that is centred along Macleod Trail, between the commercial core, Chinatown and Downtown East Village. It contains the City Hall, the Calgary Public Library, the Calgary Police headquarters, the Harry Hays building, Bow Valley College, the United States consulate and the Calgary Board of Education among other buildings.
