There are 62 cities in New York and 13 Metropolitan Areas. Albany, the capital city, can be placed at the west bank of Hudson River. Allegheny Plateau – Unglaciated
Between the arc of the Allegheny River and the southern border of the State lies the smaller section of the plateau. The terrain of this region contains rugged steep side valleys and high upland areas.
Tug Hill Plateau
It is an upland region in upstate New York, famous for heavy winter snow fall. It is an outlier of the Appalachians, entirely separated from other provinces. The region lies east of Lake Ontario and north of Oneida Lake. Although the region has traditionally been known as the Tug Hill Plateau because of its flat top, it is not a plateau. It is a cuesta which is a ridge with a gentle slope on one side.
This province extends across the Hudson River in the northeast-southwest direction. It covers southern Orange and northern Rockland Counties and the area from southern Dutchess County, parts of Putnam County and Westchester County. It is a rugged, mountainous upland.
It includes a portion of Staten Island, all of Manhattan Island, a small portion of western Long Island and most of Westchester County.Piedmont in New York State is now almost reduced to a plain and lie between the coastal plain and the Highlands
This region can be placed in the southwestern part of the state. The prominent feature of this region is the Rensselaer Plateau. The region also encompasses a number of lakes, streams, rolling plateaus and lowland of the Hudson River.
This region extends from the entire length from north –to south of eastern New York. It is a lowland bounded by uplands and contains three ridges namely Schunemunk, Shawangunk and Marlboro Mountains. Valleys of the Wallkill River and Roundout Creek form most of the lowlands in the east of the Hudson whereas the rest comprises the Fishkill and Wappingers Creek valleys. The central portion consists of Hudson River Valley.
The Mohawk Lowland includes the river valleys of the Mohawk and Black Rivers. The Mohawk and Black River valleys are separated by a divide of unconsolidated glacial moraine.
St. Lawrence - Champlain Lowlands
The St. Lawrence Lowland is a plain that borders the Adirondack Mountains and extends beyond the Canadian border in the north. The lowlands can be found on the shores of Lake Ontario and run northeast along the St. Lawrence River and the Canadian border. Lake Champlain can also be placed in this region.
Erie and Ontario Lowlands
These are the plains which border the Great Lakes. The Ontario lowlands are an area generally with subdued topography, except for the Niagara escarpment. The Erie portion slopes rather uniformly from the Portage escarpment to the shores of Lake Erie.
Atlantic Coastal Plain
This area lies in the southeast part of New York. The Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain extends from the Atlantic Ocean, south of Long Island, to the Fall Line, where the hilly Piedmont begins.
There are 22 National Parks in New York, 4 National Heritage Areas, 27 National Natural Landmarks, 262 National Historic Landmarks and 5,379 National Historic Places. All the national and state parks are indicated clearly on the frame.
