Many National Parks are located in this region namely The Big Thicket National Preserve a densely forested region in southern Texas, Padre Island National Seashore located off the coast of south Texas, and Palo Alto Battlefield and National Historic Site which preserves the ground of battle of Palo Alto.
This region is bounded by Caprock Escarpment to the west. This is a transitional area between high-level plains of Llano Estacado and the surrounding rolling terrain. Edwards Plateau can be placed on the south and Eastern Cross Timbers to the east. The Western Cross Timbers can bound the region to the west.
The Great Plains
This region includes the Llano Estacado, the Edwards Plateau, Toyah Basin, Llano Uplift and the Panhandle which is a rectangular area of the state bounded by New Mexico to the west and Oklahoma to the north and the eastern side. Cities that can be placed in this region are Odessa, Lubbock, Midland, and Amarillo.
This region also houses the distinct terrain features of the Caprock Canyons, Palo Duro Canyons, black land prairies and many Playa lakes which are dry lakes covered with Alkaline Compounds. National Parks located in this region are Lyndon. B. Johnson National Historical Park and San Antonio Missions National Historical Park.
Basin and Range Province
The hill portion of Texas lies west of the Pecos River and is also known as the Trans-Pecos Natural Region. It includes Sand Hills, Stockton Plateau, Desert Valley, Wooden Mountain slopes and desert grasslands. Davis Mountains can be placed on the eastern side of this region and the Rio Grande can be placed on the western and southern sides.
National Parks in this region are Amistad National Recreation Area, Big Bend National Park, Chamizal National Memorial a site commemorating the peaceful settlement of Chamizal dispute, Fort Davis National Historic Site, Guadalupe Mountains National Park, and the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River which is a part of the Chihuahuan Desert.
National/ State Parks
Texas is home to fourteen National Parks which can be located with clarity on the frame. The two National parks Guadalupe Mountains National Park and Big Bend. Other protected landscapes are Padre Island, The Big Thicket, Lake Amistad and Lake Meredith. There are 80 State parks and state natural areas in Texas.
