New Jersey's nickname, the Garden State, dates back to the late 1800s. According to a book by Alfred Heston in 1926, Abraham Browning of Camden called New Jersey the Garden State because of its immense barrel, filled with good things to eat and open at both ends, with Pennsylvanians grabbing from one end and New Yorkers from the other.
