Contained within the 1st Edition (1906) of the Atlas of Canada is a map that shows the rail companies that operated in Saskatchewan, areas of Manitoba and Alberta circa 1904. The railway lines are indicated in black, and the territory tributary to each line is shown in colours. An overprint note, in blue, gives some updated information. Any point in the area coloured green, is in a closer proximity to a specific station on the Intercolonial railway, then to a station on any other system. This method is similarly applied to the other lines. The map includes statistics of the mileage, rolling stock, receipts, cost of construction and the cost of maintenance of the various railway lines for 1903-04. Some mileage data is as of 1905. The table also gives the Canadian total for these statistics as of June 30, 1904. The map displays the railway systems running across the border and into part of the U.S., but they do not own or control the Canadian railways.

About the Railways system in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta
The province of Manitoba hosts two major freight railways - one passenger railway, one tourist railway and several short-line railways. About the railways in Manitoba, CN operates in the province through their main line stretching east-west through Winnipeg, as well as the Letellier subdivision south from Winnipeg to the US border to interchange with BNSF. CN’s “Prairie North Line” runs west from Portage la Prairie through Gladstone, Dauphin and into Saskatchewan.
In addition to the two national rail lines, there are 13 shortline railways operating in Saskatchewan. These railways are used to transport products such as grain, oil and wood and provide important links between remote delivery points and the larger national rail lines of CN and CP Railway. In total, there are more than 2,000 km of railways under provincial jurisdiction.
The brief history of railways operation in Alberta begins with the first railway in Alberta - Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) which was built across the province through Medicine Hat, Calgary and Banff in 1882 - 83. Over the next 25 years the CPR completed a number of branch lines, somewhat more concentrated in southern Alberta than in the north.
