About Toronto city

Toronto is the capital city of the province of Ontario and the largest city in Canada by population, with 2,731,571 residents in 2016. According to the 2016 survey, Toronto census metropolitan area (CMA), of which the majority is within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), held a population of 5,928,040, making it Canada's most populous CMA. The city is also the anchor of an urban agglomeration, known as the Golden Horseshoe in Southern Ontario, located on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario. Often regarded as a global city, Toronto is a centre of business, finance, arts, and culture, and is recognized as one of the most multicultural and cosmopolitan cities in the world.

Geography

With an area of 630 square kilometres, the city covers a maximum north-south distance of 21 kilometres and a maximum east-west distance of 43 km. It has a 46-kilometre long waterfront shoreline, on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario. The city's borders are formed by Lake Ontario to the south, Etobicoke Creek and Highway 427 to the west, Steeles Avenue to the north and the Rouge River and the Toronto-Pickering Townline to the east.

Economy

Toronto is an international centre for business and finance. Generally considered the financial capital of Canada, Toronto has a high concentration of banks and brokerage firms on Bay Street, in the Financial District. The city is an important centre for the media, publishing, telecommunication, information technology and film production industries. Besides, the city continues to be a wholesale and distribution point for the industrial sector.

Demographics

Population of Toronto grew by 96,073 residents between 1996 and 2001, and around 21,787 residents between 2001 and 2006, 111,779 residents between 2006 and 2011, and 116,511 between 2011 and 2016.

Ethnicity

The year 2016 saw Chinese (12.5%), English (12.3%), and Canadian (12.0%) to be the majorly reported ethnicities in the region. Common regions of ethnic origin were European (47.9%), Asian (including middle-Eastern – 40.1%), African (5.5%), Latin/Central/South American (4.2%), and North American aboriginal (1.2%).
