Upside Down World Map

Ever wonder what the world would look like if you turned it around, and Australia and South America were on top? The upside down map of the world will have your guests intrigued, and help you rethink the world as you know it.

This is a politically detailed upside down world wall map with everything reversed! One can see that the south is at the top of the map, the north is at the base and the southern hemisphere is now at the top. The countries in the east are now on the left of the map, and those in the west are now on the right of this upside down map. The map has countries marked in different colours according to international country boundaries. Capital cities (including approximate population size) and hill shading are also shown on this upside down world wall map.

How is the map different?

The map helps us to appreciate that the world is spherical rather than flat and presents a different view of the world than what is represented in usual maps. Although this upside down version of the map is aimed at secondary school aged children, it makes a great addition to a family room or office as well. The sizes of this map makes it ideal for classroom walls too. The map can be ordered online at MapTrove.

Upside down or reversed maps show the world geography from a completely different perspective and also challenge our casual acceptance of European perspectives as global norms. The McArthur map also makes us wonder why we are so quick to assume that Northern Europeans were the ones who invented the modern map — and decided which way to hold it — in the first place. But with this representation, one can certainly learn about looking at things differently. Merely by turning the map upside down and keeping all other aspects of the map unchanged, the viewer gets to see the world’s geography as if seeing it for the first time.
