The Northern Territory is the third largest Australian federal division with a total land area of 520,902 sq mi. It shares land boundaries with Western Australia, South Australia, and Queensland. Towards the north, it is bounded by the Timor Sea, the Arafura Sea and the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Queensland in the north-east of the country is bordered by the Northern Territory, South Australia and New South Wales to the west, south-west, and south respectively. It also shares boundaries with the Coral Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Queensland is often referred to as the Sunshine State.
