Where is Lake Powell?

Lake Powell is a reservoir located on the Colorado River and spreads in the parts of Garfield, Kane, and San Juan counties in southern Utah, and in the Coconino County in northern Arizona. It straddles the border between Utah and Arizona in the US. The northern limits of the lake extend as far as the Hite Crossing Bridge.

The lake is a major tourist spot with around two million people visiting it every year. It is also the second-largest man-made reservoir by maximum water capacity in the US.

Bathymetry of the Lake Powell

Lake Powell has a maximum length of 186 mi (299 km) and a maximum width of 25 mi (40 km). The surface area of the lake is 161,390 acres (65,310 ha) and the average depth is marked at 132 ft (40 m) with 583 ft (178 m) being the maximum. Also, its shore length measures around 3,057 km (1,900 mi).

Major landmarks near the lake

  • Glen Canyon Dam - This is a dam that forms Lake Powell and is created on the Colorado River in northern Arizona.
  • Rainbow Bridge - This is one of the world's largest natural bridges, made from sandstone deposited by wind as sand dunes, during the end of the Triassic and the Jurassic periods.
  • Hite Crossing Bridge - This is the only bridge that spans Lake Powell. It also marks the upstream limit of Lake Powell and the end of Cataract Canyon of the Colorado River.
